I had to have an emergency Caesarian at New Cross 6 weeks ago. The treatment I received was completely varied. In the delivery suite and operating theatre the staff were wonderful and reassured me during a worrying time. The emergency staff even came down to visit and check on me the day after as they were concerned I'd lost so much blood. The midwife, Karen, was brilliant as she sat for 4 hours making notes and offering support. The anaesthetist and new female doctor were also professional and acted efficiently- I could not thank these people enough as I strongly believe that they saved mine and my baby's lives. Once on the ward, the 'care' was appalling: I was left in bloody gowns for 12 hours, a porter trod on my catheter bag, I was made to move rooms, load things on my bed and carry, people took forever to bring me a tray for my food so it went cold, no one told me where to go for things, I was left in agony as they didn't bring me pain relief as my note were in the pharmacy, no one asked for a urine sample until 24 hours after removing the catheter and they tried to send me home without checking my stitches or removing a cannula. It is such a shame that the ward staff ruined this experience and the reputation of the emergency staff.

On the whole, a good hospital. I have witnessed a few niggly problems over the years, but I would put this down to staffing levels rather to the staff themselves. They saved my life, what more can I say.

I had my c - section done at New Cross and I can honestly say I was hacked to pieces! The surgeon was rough and I have since had 3 infections in it. Following the surgery, my midwife was so appalled by my wound that she wrote an incident report about it. In addition, at 3 and a half weeks old, my son was admitted to New Cross with Pyloric Stenosis. After being in the Pediatric Assessment Unit, we overheard the consultant give incorrect information to the Junior doctors (see my review of Dr. Dison), I was told to go home as my son was "only borderline malnourished" and come back in 2 days and was then given a very hard time about my desire to have him transferred to Bham Childrens Hospital. My wish was granted and my son was transferred. Upon arrival to the Childrens Hospital, I was informed that the drip which was in my sons canular was not large enough and therefore he wasn't getting the correct amount of fluids and the syringe they were using (sorry I don't know the technical terms) in order to pump his stomach was equally not suitable and therefore when the nurses informed me that his stomach was empty at New Cross, It in fact was not and had to be drained further. If you have a sick child, please take them to Bham Childrens Hospital - they were amazing, do not go through what I have had to go through at New Cross!!

The whole hospital is spot-less with all the necessary hand washing/bacterial preventions in place. It is well signed, and each reception desk is always manned. With the inevitable exception of Out-patients, where time-keeping must be a nightmare, I have not had to wait for any of my appointments. There is an air of orderly efficiency about the place, but no undue haste. One point which will reinforce my overall view is the attention to the needs of the patient. For example, in the Chemo Dept., patients undergoing lengthy treatments are provided with refreshments { snacks and beverages } so their treatment is not interrupted. Recommendation ---- 100%
